Property Tax Valuation Process

Local government relies upon property taxes in order to provide public services.  The annual budgeting process begins with establishing the value of the property and ends with setting the tax rate.  The task of setting the property value is the responsibility of each county’s appraisal district.  Each appraisal district sets the value of every property in the county, and they do this every year.

The Texas Property Tax Code provides property owners with the right to challenge the value of their property.  The first step in exercising your rights is to deliver a Notice of Protest form to the Appraisal Review Board (ARB).

The appraisal district considers your evidence and makes a settlement offer.  A case may be presented to the ARB if the settlement offer is unacceptable.  A judicial appeal may be filed in district court if the ARB ruling is unacceptable.
